The objective of this research was to develop a stem height measurement system forMiscanthus giganteus (MxG), to be used as a component in a future Look Ahead Yield Monitor (LAYM). For this purpose, a SICK LMS 291 LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) unit was evaluated in static and dynamic mode. To eliminate the error caused by inclination angles from undulations in the ground surface and installation, an inclination correction algorithm was developed that improved the measurement accuracy in both static and dynamic mode. In static mode, the sensor was kept stationary and evaluated among various MxG stem densities. The results showed an average error of 5.08% with a maximum error of 8% and a minimum error of 1.8%. The static height measurement approach was also employed to measure the crop height in a 5 10 m field, and, compared to manual measurements, an error of 4.2% was achieved. In dynamic mode, the sensor was driven past a field edge to provide a three-dimensional structure of the crop. An Ordinary Least Squares based surface fitting algorithm was applied to generate both the top and ground surfaces of the covered area, resulting in an average crop height. The results showed that the dynamic height measurement achieved an average error of 3.8% with a maximum error of 6.5% and a minimum error of 1.5%. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Description and Codification of Miscanthus × giganteus Growth Stages for Phenological Assessment
Triploid Miscanthus × giganteus (Greef et Deu. ex Hodkinson et Renvoize) is a sterile, perennial grass used for biomass production in temperate environments. While M. × giganteus has been intensively researched, a scale standardizing description of M. × giganteus morphological stages has not been developed. Here we provide such a scale by adapting the widely-used Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bund...
متن کاملSub-zero cold tolerance of Spartina pectinata (prairie cordgrass) and Miscanthus × giganteus: candidate bioenergy crops for cool temperate climates
Miscanthus × giganteus grown in cool temperate regions of North America and Europe can exhibit severe mortality in the year after planting, and poor frost tolerance of leaves. Spartina pectinata (prairie cordgrass), a productive C4 perennial grass native to North America, has been suggested as an alternative biofuel feedstock for colder regions; however, its cold tolerance relative to M. × giga...
متن کاملComparative Biogeochemical Cycles of Bioenergy Crops Reveal Nitrogen-Fixation and Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions in a Miscanthus 3 giganteus Agro-Ecosystem
We evaluated the biogeochemical cycling and relative greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential of proposed biofuel feedstock crops by modeling growth dynamics of Miscanthus 9 giganteus Greef et Deuter (miscanthus), Panicum virgatum L. (switchgrass), Zea mays L. (corn), and a mixed prairie community under identical field conditions. DAYCENT model simulations for miscanthus were parameterized wit...
متن کاملGrowth and fecundity of fertile Miscanthus × giganteus (“PowerCane”) compared to feral and ornamental Miscanthus sinensis in a common garden experiment: Implications for invasion
Perennial grasses are promising candidates for bioenergy crops, but species that can escape cultivation and establish self-sustaining naturalized populations (feral) may have the potential to become invasive. Fertile Miscanthus × giganteus, known as "PowerCane," is a new potential biofuel crop. Its parent species are ornamental, non-native Miscanthus species that establish feral populations and...
متن کاملPhysiological and growth responses to water deficit in the bioenergy crop Miscanthus x giganteus
High yielding perennial biomass crops of the species Miscanthus are widely recognized as one of the most promising lignocellulosic feedstocks for the production of bioenergy and bioproducts. Miscanthus is a C4 grass and thus has relatively high water use efficiency. Cultivated Miscanthus comprises primarily of a single clone, Miscanthus x giganteus, a sterile hybrid between M. sacchariflorus an...
